Enlighten yourself while you sleep

Lucid dreaming in three easy steps: a tool for expanding your consciousness

Lucid dreaming lets you do all this, and more.

Lucid dreaming lets you fly, touch the stars, go back in time to heal your childhood and much, much more best of all, this is not only an imaginary, dreaming, experience.

There are ways in which lucid dreaming can have real, life-changing effects on you and your world.

Envisage that you could have access to all the powers of your mind:  the creative, imaginative, free-associating part and the logical, analytical, practical, self-aware, conscious part.

Suppose that you could also have access to all your memories, including everything you’ve ever seen, heard or experienced a wealth of knowledge and information at your disposal.

Finally, imagine that you are free of any of the restrictions of time, space and physics that apply to “everyday reality”.

dreaming1Now just think what you could do, with such an amazing wealth of resources, all easily accessible through lucid dreaming being lucid you can dream creative solutions and solve problems and remember the solutions to put into practice when you awaken.

You can dream, interpret what your dream images mean, resolve and heal the conflicts and pain in your psyche all during your sleep and wake up feeling lighter, and healed of past pain and past patterns.

Lucid dreaming is a skill that anyone can learn; it just takes some practice and application to acquire the skill and to use it effectively.

There are many books and resources available on the internet and it is possible to learn this skill by yourself.

Like many things, however, if you can find a good teacher, especially one who backs their training with energy skills, it will save you time and effort.

You will get the feedback and guidance you need to progress quickly and also an experienced healer and teacher can help you to use your new skills wisely and well.

Let’s get the dreaming started

1.  You’ll want to have, remember and record your dreams regularly.  Write down whatever you remember the moment you wake up; recording and becoming interested in your dreams also helps towards becoming lucid.

2.  Practice frequently several times a day just pausing to ask yourself and consider “Am I awake or asleep?”  “Am I awake or dreaming?”

dream-butterflyTake the time to think about this, to reflect on the nature of ‘reality’.  How do you know that you are awake, or asleep?

Especially in those ‘borderline’ states of consciousness, when you are daydreaming or just waking up or just falling asleep?  Or how about the times when you do things on autopilot?

Perhaps you are driving somewhere and realise later that you were unaware of the journey, and were ‘somewhere else’ in your thoughts.

3.  The next step is to practice gaining control of these borderline states of mind.

Choose to stay at the half-asleep stage and delay drifting into sleep, or delay waking up and remain in a dreamy state, recalling the dream you’ve just had.

You can also go back into the dream action and see whether you can continue it without fully falling asleep again. . .

Lucid dreaming is within your grasp

Learning lucid dreaming is easier than you may think, or than some books would lead you to believe, and some of the methods in traditional sources make the process of learning slower and harder than it needs to be.

These three steps are the keys to developing the skill of lucid dreaming quickly and easily.  If you are having any difficulty dreaming or lucid dreaming, start by working with your daydreams instead.


If you can start lucid dreaming first, do so and then get some training.  If you are struggling, save time and find a teacher.

Lucid dreaming gives you access to amazing creative and healing potential all while you are still getting the refreshing rest and sleep you need.

We spend a third of our lives sleeping why would you waste that time in unconsciousness, when you could be enjoying so much more?

At its best, lucid dreaming is a wonderful means for you to learn, grow and evolve as a spiritual and enlightened being.

  1. Hi, thank you :) I love your article...will most certainly give it a try. I have had a feeling about this... I have experienced quite a few of those lucid dreams, both during the day - while awake and during the night - while asleep.
    Sometimes I have a feeling our fantasy has a lot more significance than we let it have... A lot of the lucid daydreams have started of by a fantasy to then evolve into something else... What do you think???

  6. Hi Lilith & Diana,

    Lucid means clear, as opposed to confused or obscure.
    The term 'lucid dream' refers to a dream in which the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming and can think and act consciously within the dream.

    Such dreams can be accessed in 2 main ways - you may be asleep and dreaming and then become aware that you dreaming, or you may move from being awake straight into a lucid dreaming state.

    I teach both ways, as well as working with conscious awareness in various 'trance' and 'daydreaming' states of mind.

  8. Can you tell me - is it a lucid dream if you have a vision of something when you are wide awake?

    I have had a phoenix swoop down over me while driving my car, it almost hit me. It is one of the most profound moments of my life so far...
    It's tail appeared again at another time, flapping in front of my face while I was in meditation...

    Nobody has ever been able to explain these experiences to me.
    I feel extremely lucky to have had them.
    Do you think that's lucid dreaming?

  9. Interesting stuff. When I become aware in a lucid dream I tend to wake up. I would like to know how to use lucid dreaming in a positive way. I guess it's reprogramming the subconcious, but it could be used in many ways.

    I have one experience where I need to go to toilet. But I cannot in my dream state...thankfully! But it has happened so regularly that when I dream like this I know what's happening.

    It reminds me of a lucid dreaming course that suggested drinking salt water and leaving a glass of water which you would lucid dream for, but there are easier more pleasant ways. I liked one where you were basically in a hypnotic state and you would stretch your astral arm to touch the floor through the bed... strange but to be honest I've not used it much since.

    I've read some books where people use it to explore a kind of kabbalistic tree of life world which sounds like fun, but not really my trip. But is fun controlling your dreams :) maybe I should get back into it.

    I would call this a vision, rather than a lucid dream; and maybe you were in a similar 'state of consciousness' while driving your car and while meditating, or maybe they were different.. For myself, I am less interested in the terminology, whether these are lucid dreams, visions or something else -

    What you have there is something amazing, powerful, fascinating... the phoenix a guide for you, or
    ...a sign with specific meaning
    since it has appeared for you more than once?

    Definitely worth exploring more actively, if you have not already done so..
    Ask the phoenix to come to you - in your dreams or meditations or day dreams.
    Ask the phoenix for the meaning of these appearances, if you don't already know.

    (Just think your question in a relaxed, quiet moment, and trust the answer will come.)

    To me, from what you have written, each time the phoenix is dramatically catching your attention, while you were in a relaxed, receptive state and focusing on something else. If so, what did you need to pay attention to around the times when this happened?

    Also, I have a feeling that this experience is 'breaking through' from somewhere else - as in another, or parallel dimension. And therefore very interesting in terms of other possibilities of exploration too..

    It is a real relief to hear some thoughts on my experience - I sometimes feel like I sound a little loopy when I sound people out on whether they have heard of anything like this before.
    I will definitely try to call on the phoenix.
    It had never entered my mind to do so, but that gives me some avenues to explore.
    I will let you know if it leads somewhere interesting...

    To help extend those theoretical references, here is a real-life example of a lucid dream I had this morning.

    Background: My parents and I never moved; we lived in the house where I arrived from the hospital after birth, until I left for university.

    In the dream this morning, my mother, father and I were moving into a new house. I was in the basement of the new house with my father. The basement came with existing stuff left by the previous owners. A bin holding rolled up carpets, standing upright, etc.

    My father started to place our articles in the basement, and I realized that there is a large room in the basement which he was "blocking off", in the feng shui sense, with our newly unloaded articles. I pointed out to him that below the low "arch" of two doorways in this basement lay a large unused room we were ignoring and that had a lot of utility and storage area -- and that we should use it up rather than block it off.

    In another scene, there was the building we were apparently leaving, and the responsibility fell to me to get all of our things out -- and there was some anxiety, stickiness and conflict with the custodians to vacating the property (am I channeling the collective American experience at present here ? :)

    The "lucid" part of the dream is when, still dreaming, I started speaking to friends of mine who were there (as dream characters) like Karen, and saying:

    "My parents are dead, right? And I was just dreaming. So I don't have to feel all this pressure and responsibility, because it's just a dream. My parents are dead . . ."

    When I woke up, the expansive gift of the lucid dream, or teaching, is that even when I'm having thoughts and impressions of the work-a-day world, apparently "awake," they are constructs of a highly-subjective personality's or ego's making. They are not fundamental denizens of "reality."

    As many of the mystics on this site say, knowing or reality lies precisely beyond the action of "thinking." And the machinery of thinking is at best an entertainment, or faux intelligence.
